I keep my sanity in the earth,
I keep it in my two hands
As I shovel compost onto a screen
And watch worms wriggle through the mesh
Into the earth below.
I shed stress with sweat
As I mow the grass
After a weekend away
Long blades falling to the rotary cutter
In the late afternoon sunlight.
I plant my frustration
Along with daffodil bulbs
That have spent their spring flowers
As I wait for children to come home
After a day of things going wrong.
These things connect me with myself
The well of silence
That lives within.
